Even 90s Toyotas have their weak spots, and one of them is the little connectors to the ignition coils. Therefore, I need three new ones (only 3 because of the wasted spark system)

So I go to the website of my local Toyota dealer for part # 90980-11246, which they list at $5.44 each.

When I walked into the parts counter at the SAME DEALER, he told me $13 each! WTF? I asked him about hte other price, and apparently you have to order them online, which I did after returning home from that trip. There is no shipping charge because local pickup is offered.

So the question is, why are the prices different? And why the fuck couldn't he just give me the online price?

Because. That service technician? He probably has a boss. His boss also probably has a boss. I'm guessing he didn't try and charge you the full $13 because you're a raging asshole, or he is, but because that's the price he's authorized to allow. I'd wager it's nothing personal.

Still strange, though! I could see if the price difference was a dollar or so.

Also, the MSRP for the part is listed as $6.95

My guess would be that if he sold them to you from the counter at 5 bucks then they couldn't charge the person who brings their car in for service 13 bucks. You'd think they would match the online price but online orders might come from a warehouse somewhere so if you need it right then it's 13, if you can wait it's 5

That can't be it, either!

Because they didn't have any in stock, and they'd have to order it. He told me it could be here tomorrow. When I asked if it would take the same amount of time if I ordered online, "Would it still be here tomorrow?" he said yes.

Parts and service are two different departments at this dealer, and anyway Pep Boys does the higher parts prices on the service counter, but their regular parts dept prices are the same in-store and online.

Must be the dealer markup since it has to go through the dealers hands instead of drop shipped from the warehouse. They have to pay the guy that orders it, the guy that unpacks it and checks it, and probably shipping from the warehouse too even though customers get free shipping.

Look at it from their end.

While you, the end customer, may be able to find free shipping online they may not be able to because they're not buying a few units at a time. Given the size of their order, it may not be possible for the dealership supplier to provide free shipping - free shipping is typically used to target consumers, not retailers. Throw on top of that the need to make a buck off of everything it can, the business can't be in the business of being a for-free middle man.

The reason most dealerships charge more for parts? They have overhead and expenses and profit margins which all need to be addressed. This is why it's usually cheaper to find the part at a parts supply versus a dealership and even cheaper at a junkers versus a parts supply. The online retailers tend to land somewhere between junk-yard and parts supply in terms of cost.

even though you got to the parts site from your dealer, it's the same parts house for all dealers in a certain area. So you'd be ordering from the same place no matter what dealer you linked to it from.

This makes sense.
